The Usual Suspects (1995)

The usual suspects is a drama directed by Bryan Singer in 1995. The film stars Stephan Baldwin, Kevin Pollack, Gabriel Byrne, Pete Postlethwaite, Chazz Palminteri and Kevin Spacey.

Through the sole survivor the usual suspects depicts the events that led up to a shootout on a boat that is being investigated by police. The story is told through five criminals who meet at a police line-up and start working together. This movie will keep you guessing and have you routing for the bad guy. The characters are instantly likeable, despite them being criminals. They are very human and they all have very distinct personalities.

I really like how this movie had been directed you slowly get information fed to you throughout the film keeping your curiosity sparked throughout the whole film. You don’t get all the information till the very end of the film and it will leave with your jaw dropped, I guarantee it.

I would definitely call this movie a classic. It is something that everyone who loves a bit of mystery and action is sure to love.

The Notebook (2004)

The Notebook is a 2004 romantic drama film based on the novel of the same name by Nicholas Sparks. The film stars Ryan Gosling as Noah Calhoun and Rachel McAdams as Allie Hamilton. The story is narrated by a present-day nursing home resident named Duke, who reads a romance story to a fellow resident who has senile dementia with memory loss.

Set during the early 1940s in South Carolina, Noah, a local country boy, is attracted to the seventeen-year-old Allie, who is spending her summer vacation in Seabrook, after seeing her at a carnival. They soon fall in love and share a summer love affair. Allie’s parents do not approve of their relationship and ban them from seeing each other because of their differences in social class. After having no choice, they move on with their lives and after several years meet each other again.

For a few years, I have heard my friends tell me how this is such a beautiful film and always makes them cry, which is why avoided watching it for so long. Finally I caved in and watched it and it never fails to bring me to tears every time. The film will make you feel all warm and fuzzy and will make you wish you had someone like Noah.

Pacific Rim (2013)

Pacific Rim is a 2013 American science fiction monster film directed by Guillermo del Toro starringCharlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day, Robert Kazinsky, Max Martini, and Ron Perlman.  The movie is set in 2020s in which earth is at war with enormous colossal sized alien creatures that erupt from the sea called Kajus. To combat this enormous threat humanity creates gigantic weaponed mech suits that are co controlled by two immensely skilled pilots.  The movie is set around the protagonist Raleigh Becket a former legendary Jaeger pilot who is whirled back out retirement due to overwheliming uncontrollable threat of the Kajus.

Despite the amazing story and character progression , the movie is well noted for it breath taking fight/action scenes. Some of the whirling action scenes have a geometric beauty that's faintly Abstract, each fight contains surprises: a tactic you haven't seen yet, a power you didn't know about, a complication you didn't see coming.

Pan's Labyrinth (2006)

El laberinto del fauno (or in boring old English: Pan's Labyrinth) is a 2006 dark fantasy film directed by Guillermo del Toro. Pan's Labyrinth may be the coolest film in existence, and has made me curse my inability to understand Spanish every day.

The film is set in Spain, 1944, after the Spanish Civil War, centring around the main character Ofelia, an abandoned labyrinth and a mysterious faun creature. The narrative of the film interweaves seamlessly with the fairy tale of the Princess Moanna of the Underworld, who died and her father is said to have believed that her spirit would one day return. Meanwhile in 1944, Ofelia meets her step father Vidal, a frighteningly cold Falange officer, with her pregnant mother. Ofelia is one of those typical protagonists, whose curiosity gets the better of them, but holy moly, things go so wrong. Upon meeting the faun, Ofelia is given three tasks to complete before the full moon in order to become immortal as the faun believes she is Princess Moanna. The most terrifying scene in the entire film is Ofelia's encounter with the Pale Man. But not even the part when the Pale Man eats the fairies. The moment he wakes up you will pee your freaking pants.

The thing that will bring you to happy tears in this film is that the Animatronics and CGI is absolutely incredible, holding up very well and sometimes stronger in comparison to other films that have been made more recently. Pan's Labyrinth is everything a director could ever hope for their movie to be and an absolute must-see for any mere mortal that wishes to be whisked off into a world of mystical horror.

Sin City (2005)

Sin City is a quirky 2005 film directed by Frank Miller, Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino. It stars some big names such as Jessica Alba and Bruce Willis. This film is directed in a way that is very unusual, but once you get used to it you can’t get enough of the strange settings and characters

Sin City tells the intertwining stories of three characters, who are caught up in the corrupt world of Basin city. What really makes this film stand out is that it is filmed almost entirely in black and white with only a few colours dispersed here and there on characters. It gives the film a very sinister and edgy feel to it, in my opinion only adding to its appeal.

Sin City is quite a violent film, however, it doesn’t dwell on blood and gore. The directors have strategically left out any excessive detail in the violent scenes. So even if you’re a bit squeamish about gore this film shouldn’t unsettle your stomach.

This is a really unique film and one I believe everyone should give a chance. It may not be everyone’s cup of tea but I think many people would be pleasantly surprised by the characters and story that the directors have put together.

The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas (2008)

The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas is a 2008 British-Irish historical-drama buddy film based on the novel of the same name by John Boyne. The film stars Asa Butterfield as Bruno and Jack Scanlon as Shmuel. Set during World War II, the story is seen through the eyes of Bruno, the eight-year old son of the extermination camp’s Nazi commandant. It unfolds after Bruno’s family relocates from Germany to Poland after his father is promoted. At the new home, he hates that there is nobody to play with and that there is little to explore. He one day disobeys his parents by sneaking off beyond the house and eventually arrives at the fence of the camp where he befriends a Jewish boy, Shmuel, who asks for food on the other side of the fence.

If you ever decide to watch this film (which I recommend you do), bring the tissues. The film is so much more devastating and intense as compared to the novel. The characters of the two innocent boys are well played and had me in tears at the end of the film, even though I knew what was coming. The Holocaust is an emotionally demanding subject and having this told through two young boys is powerful.
