The Usual Suspects (1995)

The usual suspects is a drama directed by Bryan Singer in 1995. The film stars Stephan Baldwin, Kevin Pollack, Gabriel Byrne, Pete Postlethwaite, Chazz Palminteri and Kevin Spacey.

Through the sole survivor the usual suspects depicts the events that led up to a shootout on a boat that is being investigated by police. The story is told through five criminals who meet at a police line-up and start working together. This movie will keep you guessing and have you routing for the bad guy. The characters are instantly likeable, despite them being criminals. They are very human and they all have very distinct personalities.

I really like how this movie had been directed you slowly get information fed to you throughout the film keeping your curiosity sparked throughout the whole film. You don’t get all the information till the very end of the film and it will leave with your jaw dropped, I guarantee it.

I would definitely call this movie a classic. It is something that everyone who loves a bit of mystery and action is sure to love.

Sin City (2005)

Sin City is a quirky 2005 film directed by Frank Miller, Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino. It stars some big names such as Jessica Alba and Bruce Willis. This film is directed in a way that is very unusual, but once you get used to it you can’t get enough of the strange settings and characters

Sin City tells the intertwining stories of three characters, who are caught up in the corrupt world of Basin city. What really makes this film stand out is that it is filmed almost entirely in black and white with only a few colours dispersed here and there on characters. It gives the film a very sinister and edgy feel to it, in my opinion only adding to its appeal.

Sin City is quite a violent film, however, it doesn’t dwell on blood and gore. The directors have strategically left out any excessive detail in the violent scenes. So even if you’re a bit squeamish about gore this film shouldn’t unsettle your stomach.

This is a really unique film and one I believe everyone should give a chance. It may not be everyone’s cup of tea but I think many people would be pleasantly surprised by the characters and story that the directors have put together.

Spirited Away (2001)

Spirited Away is a 2001 animated film directed by Hayao Miyazaki with voice actors Daveigh Chase, Suzanne Pleshette and Miyu Irino. It is created by studio Ghibli, who are renowned for creating some of the most popular animated films, such as Howls Moving Castle.

Spirited Away tells the story of a young girl Chihiro, who in the middle of her move into the suburbs with her parents happens upon a world of spirits. While they are there her parents get turned into pigs, her journey brings her to a bathhouse for the spirits as she sets out to rescue her parents.

While this animated film is directed at a younger audience, I don’t think you are ever too old to enjoy this film. The animation itself is incredible and you are introduced to an abundance of quirky and imaginative characters. One of my favourite things about this film in its uniqueness. You rarely come across such unusual and delightful characters and stories outside of studio Ghibli. I for one could not help but get swept up in Miyazaki’s imaginary world of spirits, witches, monsters and adventure.

Fight Club (1999)

Fight Club was directed by David Fincher in 1999 and stars Brad Pitt, Edward Norton and Helena Bonham Carter. This movies is a drama and is not for the faint hearted. However, if you love a dark and violent story, this is sure to be right up your alley.

Fight Club tells the story of an insomniac and a soap salesman who band together to create an underground fight club.You’re sure to have heard plenty of one liners from the film already and it is almost impossible not to be sucked in by the often crazy progressions of this story. It’s use of love, violence and slightly messed up friendships is sure to keep everyone watching.

And while it is easily forgotten when watching the movie, it has revolutionary undertones. Fight Club makes a very strong statement about the perils of modern day materialism using violence and narration by the main character (Edward Norton). The movie is sure to get your blood pumping and mind working in overdrive, so be sure to get in on the action!

Pulp Fiction (1994)

Violence and comedy rarely make as good a match as they do in Pulp Fiction. The 1994 film was directed by Quinten Tarantino and stars a number of big names like, Uma Thurman, Bruce Willis, Samuel L. Jackson and John Travolta.

In Pulp Fiction the stories of two hit men, a mobster’s wife and a boxer all intertwine to create a riveting plot line. Even if violence and crime aren’t your cup of tea, you’re sure to fall in love with the characters through the amazing dialogue and relationships created by Tarantino.

This movie if full to the brim with amazing one liners that you’re sure to be having a giggle about with your friends years down the track. 

If I still haven’t managed to entice you, you’re sure to love the funky tunes of the Pulp Fiction soundtrack. While the film tackles some pretty dark scenes it remains light and comedic all the way through. This movie is definitely a classic and is sure to be a favourite!
